Businesses for Food Lovers Who Aren't Chefs

It's possible to start a business dealing with food without having to prepare it. Here are a few business ideas for those passionate about food, but who don't cook.

When one thinks of business ideas dealing with food, catering and food vending typically come to mind. What about the entrepreneurial foodies who aren’t adept in the kitchen? There is such a thing as someone being passionate about food, but not being a good cook. Luckily, no matter what skills one has, they can probably be put to use working in the food industry. Here are four business ideas for food lovers who aren’t master chefs or bakers.

Photography

Food photographers are in demand- amazing photos of food are used everywhere from recipe websites to magazines and advertisements. To start a food photography business, one could sell stock photos, which are pictures that are sold for commercial use. After building a portfolio, have brochures made, and send information to local business that may need the services of a food photographer such as restaurants, hotels, caterers, bakeries, wedding cake shops, and even local magazines that have a gourmet section. Having a website is a good idea, so that potential customers can easily access the best shots from a portfolio, and get more information about rates and services.

Video Game Development

Those with a knack for developing software or digital design, who also have a love for food, may want to consider starting a video game company that specializes in food-themed games. From time management to tycoon games, there have been many hit game series that focus on food. The trick to being successful is to develop a game concept that isn’t too similar to the titles already on the market, which is affordable, and has excellent game play and graphics. A website is pretty much essential when starting a video game company, and the games themselves can be promoted by having them distributed through any of the larger game membership sites.

Niche Blogging

Blogging is a form of social media that is hot, and won’t be losing its appeal anytime soon. When starting a niche food blog, there are a few things necessary in order for the venture to be lucrative: well-written, engaging content, an attractive well-organized site layout, and targeted traffic. One could write about any type of food, or even post reviews of new products or restaurants. The way to make money with niche blogging is through advertising revenues. This is not a way to make money overnight, but with persistence, careful planning, and targeted promotion, a food blog can earn substantial income.

Food Publicity

Creative thinking, knowing how to establish relationships with the media, and knowledge of food can combine to equal a career as a food publicist. One may already be a publicist and just switch areas of expertise, of they can go to school to get a degree in public relations or marketing, and become a publicist in the food industry upon graduation. Forming a boutique public relations firm is a route many publicists take. A food publicist can gain clientele from areas such as celebrity chefs and food personalities, food publications, restaurants, food manufacturing companies, and food-related events.

These are just a few possibilities in the world of food-related businesses. Just because one can’t cook a gourmet meal or bake a killer cake does not mean they can’t have a job dealing with what they love.
