Small business owners can really benefit from seminars and classes on running a small business.

Things are constantly changing, from tax laws to technology. Most successful small business owners keep up with changes by reading industry magazines, attending conferences and taking classes that are related to their business field.

People who have never looked into continuing education opportunities may be hesitant to consider taking classes because of expense or time related concerns. However, with the many free online options available, every small business owner should pursue continuing education.

Learn to Use Computer Software

It is possible to run a business without knowing how to use computer software, but it is much more difficult to do so. Computers make so many business related tasks more efficient and enable business owners to drastically increase their customer base.

There are many computer basics classes available. While business owners can certainly head to the local community college to pay for low cost non-credit classes, this option is often not the cheapest solution. Quite a few public libraries offer free classes on computer basics, email basics, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and even how to set up a simple business website.

Learn to be an Effective Boss

Many small business owners have never been a boss before. In fact, irritation with the incompetence of former bosses is often the driving force behind many small business start ups. So, without a successful former boss to model themselves after, how do new business owners become effective bosses?

Taking classes on effective management and attending leadership seminars can be a great way to learn how to be a good boss. To find reasonably priced or free classes, check with local small business organizations and chambers of commerce.

Learn to Help a Small Business Grow

Sometimes, it seems like every class being offered is on how to start a business. However, a little perseverance can uncover some great classes that will help a small business continue to grow.

Some libraries have small business centers with dedicated small business librarians. These libraries usually will offer a few classes on starting and running a small business throughout the year, but may also offer an occasional class that is a bit more advanced. Local branches of the Small Business Development Center typically have quite a few classes for established businesses, as does the government sponsored Small Business Center.

Still not sure whether continuing education opportunities for small business owners are useful? Keeping abreast of changes and improving business practices are great reasons to pursue continuing education, but there is also another great reason to get out and take small business classes - networking. As small business owners take classes, they often make valuable contacts who can help them grow their businesses.
