How to Take Your Passion and Turn it into a Small Business

Jan 28, 2008 Felicia A. Williams

Too many people spend their days slaving away at unfulfilling jobs for a paycheck. Why not create an enjoyable way to make money?

The Internet has made it entirely possible for individuals to take a hobby and turn it into a small or home-based money making business. It may not be a full-time business right off the bat, but with focus, persistence and determination, there is no reason why anyone should not be successful.

Ray Bradbury, the prolific author, stated it perfectly when he said, "I've never worked a day in my life! I've played - all my stories are blissful. I've played my way through life." Everyone has the ability to make money from his or her passion.

Before running off with a half-baked idea, stop and do the necessary research first. Here are a few tips on how to go about turning a hobby and/or passion into a money making business.

Pinpoint Your Passion

Individuals who are 'luke warm' about a hobby lack the driving force to do what it takes to make the business viable. Money should not be the sole reason for going into business.

A hobby is something an individual is passionate about; something that an individual is willing to do and/or currently does for no compensation. For some people its scrap booking, others coin collection and others it may be dining out. Whatever it is, finding it is the first step.

Find Paying Markets

Here's where creative out-of-the-box thinking comes into play. Every individual must ask the question "How can I make money with my hobby?" Sit down with a pen and paper and make a list of every way imaginable to make money with the chosen passion. Don't stop until there are at least 25 items on the list. Out of the 25 items, there should be at least one or two viable business options.

Become an Expert

Spend time learning and keeping up to date on the latest trends. If it is truly a passionate hobby, this requirement should be fun. Customers look to do business with field experts rather than hobbyists.

Set up Shop

The Internet makes this step easy. Setting up shop is as simple as getting a free blog or setting up a website. For individuals who are not familiar with HTML coding, a blog is a good place to start. Be sure the blog/site is informative, easy to read and outlines the purpose of the business.

Get the Word Out

Once everything is set up it's important to get the word out. There are several ways to market a new business. Whether it's via newsletters, business cards, print ads, or internet marketing, be consistent and persistent. . The goal is to let people know that there is a new business in town.

Monetize the Blog/Website

Anyone with a web presence should seek to monetize their site by adding appropriately placed non-intrusive ads. Programs such as Google Adsense or affiliate marketing can be a steady source of residual income.

Track Expenses

Remember, this hobby is now a business and many business related expenses are tax deductible. Be sure to check with an accountant to confirm exactly what is and is not deductible.

Patience

Turning a hobby or passion into a viable business is not a get rich quick scheme. Just like the old-fashioned brick and mortar businesses, it takes time, planning, nurturing, constant tweaking and persistence to start and maintain a successful small business.
