There are plenty of work at home jobs to be had but be careful of scams and predators who lurk online, preying on those trying to make some extra cash.

Most people would love to work from home and have a more flexible and less stressful routine. It is possible to make a part time or even a full time living with a legitimate work at home business opportunity.

Customer Service Jobs at Home

A customer service representative working from home usually only needs access to a computer, broadband connection and a landline phone connection.

Customer service jobs from home include:

  • answering support calls as they come in,
  • telemarketing and cold calling,
  • taking, placing and canceling orders,
  • contacting existing subscribers to ask them to re-subscribe (magazines or newspapers),
  • sales and training support calls,
  • conducting market research surveys over the phone then entering and sending off responses,
  • administering questionnaires over the phone and reporting data findings.

Surveys for Money

Paid surveys are a popular way to make a little extra money online. Companies value the opinion of consumers and thus are willing to compensate for time spent giving feedback on different surveys.

The compensation received for filling out a survey will be different with each company and each survey undertaken. Payment is in the region of $1 – $10 on average, depending on the length of the survey. Some specialized surveys can pay upwards of $25 or more. Payment will be received once the survey company's minimum cash payout requirement is met.

SurveySavvy, American Consumer Opinion, Global Test Market, Survey Spot are a few of the reputable survey companies around.

Data Entry Home Based Work

Thousands of hopeful data job applicants trawl the web each day in the hopes of getting a relatively easy data entry position. Data entry jobs from legitimate companies are rare and pay a pittance (minimal wage or less). They are also highly competitive – applicants sometimes have to wait for months, only to be told that they don't fit the job requirements.

Freelance Writing Work

There are many work at home opportunities for freelance writers. Some sites will pay per article, others will pay on a revenue share basis.

Suite101 – write good quality articles and profit from the traffic generated,

Ehow - pays is members to write how to guides on just about anything,

Squidoo – the writer is paid if revenue is generated from his or her “lens”, on topics of the writer's choice,

Review Stream – write a review, get paid,

Constant Content – articles are purchased by those seeking content for their own websites and magazines.

The above sites mention only a few of the legitimate freelance writing programs out there, mostly writers do not need to have professional qualifications.

Scams - How to Recognize Them

  1. Scammers generally ask for a membership fee or shipping costs from the victim, usually at around $1.99. They will then post a next-to useless CD or book, usually on affiliate marketing programs. In the fine print of the contract, they will have an arrangement to take off a certain amount, say $99.99 each month from the person's credit card with the promise of a full refund if the customer is not satisfied. They are then nearly impossible to contact and getting a refund can take days, if not weeks of effort. A real job will invariably not materialize.
  2. Scammers usually appeal to a person's sense of greed or laziness. If there is an ad which promises $10 000 each day for 30 minutes of work, stay away from it. Not true.
  3. Watch out for sites that claim a person needs "no work experience" and they will receive "full training" on the company's products. They will more than likely setting the person up to pay for training manuals, books or software and the job will probably never materialize.
