Not all businesses struggle during recessions. Learn the tricks that help some businesses thrive during a tough economy.

As big manufacturers fold or lay off hundreds of people at a time, most small businesses face tough odds for survival. However, some will thrive. How will they manage to grow while other companies are falling prey to recession?

The key to small business success in a recession is the same thing that helps businesses succeed in a great economy. A savvy business owner looks for opportunities to grow his or her business and then makes sure to position the business so it can take full advantage of these opportunities.

Turn the Bad Housing Market into a Gold Mine

Many people are losing retirement incomes or going bankrupt as the housing market continues to sour. Big businesses are losing millions. However, some real estate related businesses are not being adversely affected by plunging housing values. In fact, these businesses are booming.

  • Some real estate lawyers and realtors are so busy they can barely take time to sleep. They have changed the focus of their businesses to foreclosure work.
  • Real estate investors are scooping up tax lien properties and then flipping them for a quick profit to people who want to rehab and rent homes.
  • Handymen and contractors are teaming up with the rehabbers to do low cost renovations that bring the properties up to code.

Small Businesses Must be Essential to Survive

Many small businesses focus on ways for people to pamper themselves or are based on the idea that busy people need help. Suddenly, all those people with disposable income are short on cash and the first thing to go is the planned vacation to the Caribbean. That means they don't need a pet sitter after all. What do they need?

  • A new resume for the job hunt and a well crafted cover letter to go with it.
  • New skills, especially if they are not able to use computers. One on one computer classes that cover all the basics can be a great way for people to learn skills that may help them land a job in a different field.
  • Child care that is flexible. A daycare center that allows parents to drop kids off in hour increments so they can job search and then allows them to move to full time enrollment in another class when they find a job is sure to be popular.
  • Low cost beauty treatments so that they can continue to look presentable as they search for new jobs. Some beauty salons and spas are taking advantage of this need with money saving subscription plans.

For small businesses that are able to adjust quickly to changing times and are willing to seize opportunities, a recession doesn't have to mean disaster. In fact, those business owners who are willing to adapt may find that their businesses continue to grow right through the recession.
