Improve Employee Morale

Keep Employees Happy With Clear Communication

Making sure employees know what is going on helps business owners increase employee job satisfaction.

Business owners often try to boost employee morale by offering monetary rewards or giving them some other tangible gift. However, while this often works, at least for a short while, there is something that employees may appreciate even more. To keep employees happy, tell them what is going on and let them know what is expected of them.

Clear Communication Will Increase Employee Job Satisfaction

When a small business owner is putting together a time consuming, but exciting plan for growth or is trying to buy out another company, he or she rarely thinks about taking precious time out to talk to employees. While the employer knows that all the employees are going to be just fine and the change will actually lead to opportunities for advancement for some hard working individuals, all the employees know is that the boss is spending an awful lot of time behind closed doors or traveling to mysterious meetings. In today's economy, many of the employees will jump to the conclusion that the company is about to fold or that severe staff cutbacks are being planned.

To improve employee morale and to avoid having the best employees become so uneasy that they start responding to calls from headhunters, even the busiest small business owner should take some time to meet with the staff and explain what is going on when any changes are being planned. If there is sensitive information or a delicate negotiation involved, details aren't necessary. Just knowing that the boss is actually looking into something that will help the company grow and that there will be opportunities for advancement is reassurance enough. While employees still may be huddled around the water cooler whispering about the latest rumors, they will be feeling excited and expectant instead of depressed and scared.

Detailed Employee Job Descriptions Are a Must

Another great way to make staff happy is to create a clear job description, complete with job title, for each employee. It may seem too simple to make a difference, but employees like knowing what is expected of them. For small business owners who have hired one or two employees to complete a variety of tasks, a simple addition to the job description that states the employee will also be expected to complete other tasks as necessary still gives plenty of room for all those odd jobs that pop up.

A great job title is a self esteem booster and confidence builder for employees, so take a bit of time to think about titles before assigning them. Secretaries and administrative assistants often have similar tasks when they work for a small business, but administrative assistant sounds a bit more impressive.

So, the next time employees seem to be a bit less motivated and a bit more stressed than usual, take a few moments to think about the reason behind the low morale before taking them to lunch or giving them a small bonus. If the company is poised for change, the employees just may need the boss to take a few moments to talk to them to turn company morale around.
