It is difficult to succeed in a home business if the work space is not organized, well supplied, and dedicated to the business. Here is a basic starting list.
A home-based business is a business that just happens to be in a home. However, to be successful, it is essential that it be treated like a business. That includes how it appears to potential clients and how easily the owner can retrieve needed files, forms, and information and get work done. When beginning a business in a home, it is not required that one duplicate the trapping of a high-rise corner office, but there are basic equipment and supplies that are needed. Home-based Business Office Space and EquipmentA business should have its own space. An area or room that is clearly different from the dining room table or a child’s bedroom. Ideally the home-based business should have a dedicated room with a door. If clients will be visiting, a separate entrance is desirable. Remove all personal items from the business office unless they are accent pieces or art objects. The office needs a work surface either a desk or table depending on the business. If cost is a serious problem, do not overlook purchasing opportunities at garage sales, going-out-of-business sales, Craig’s List, or surplus auctions. Add a file cabinet and storage shelves for paperwork, forms, and supplies. If the business requires the owner to spend hours talking on the phone or in front of a computer screen, invest in a good, comfortable and preferably ergonomic chair. If customers or clients will be visiting, have a chair for them also. Is a computer necessary for a home-based business? The short answer is “no” unless, of course, that is the business. However, computers offer many time saving programs that help keep a business organized including tracking: clients, schedules, expenses, payroll, and business information. Having email for access by and to clients via the internet is becoming essential for most home-based businesses. A cell phone with voice mail is another access point that most clients have come to expect. It is best if the phone is a line or number for the business that the family knows is business-only. Supplies for the Startup Home-based BusinessTo a great extent, the supplies needed by a business are dictated by the nature of the business. Plan on having core business supplies like paper, folders, clips, pens, mailers, and labels. A calendar either on the wall or on the computer is a great organizing tool. Daily, weekly, and monthly task requirements should direct the acquisition and organization of supplies. Make those items frequently used easily accessible on shelves, in labeled file folders, or on a computer. Keep backup supplies for items that can run out at critical times like printer cartridges, copy-machine toner, and copy paper. Use preformatted forms to collect business expense information, messages, and to-do lists. Do not rely on little slips of paper to keep the business organized. Good organization improves the impression a business owner makes and also facilitates getting business done. Setting up a home-based business office does not require thousands of dollars, but it does require thought and self-discipline.
