Ready to Own Your Own Business?

3 Questions to Ask Before Qutting Your Current Job

The economy is shaky and corporations are issuing layoffs and then requiring those who remain to do more with less. The pressure is enough to force many out.

But are you cut out to own your own business or buy a franchise? Here are 3 ways to know whether you are ready to become a business owner:

Are you temperamentally ready to be a business owner?

Running a business is not for everyone. You will require certain skill sets and qualities to succeed as a business owner. You may also need experience in the fields of sales, finance and marketing to draw in business. In franchising, you need to be a quick learner and a hard worker, too, since you'll be following the plans of the franchisor. And that requires a certain attitude too: do you struggle with following other people's rules? If so, franchising may not be the best way for you to go. No matter which sort of business you open, you have to have determination as problems will pop up here and there. If you get bogged down by them, you can never succeed.

Do you have the required money?

After character and determination, you need financial stability to start and run a business. Especially in today’s volatile market, getting money from lending institutions is becoming very difficult. They are reluctant to back a novice business owner. You can bypass that by writing a killer business plan. But, the entire problem will largely vanish if you start a franchise. Then the franchisor will either arrange for the loan amount or help you to get one. Franchising generally offers an easier way to get a Small Business Administration-backed loan since the franchisor has already exhibited that the general concept works. And you may be able to borrow against a 401(k) or retirement plan to start one.

Do you know what you want out of your business?

Starting a business is a huge career change. So, make sure that you have the right reasons to take up a business. Getting mad at your boss one day isn't enough. This has to be something that you've dreamed about and you sense the opportunity. Use your career challenges as a kick out of the nest, not a way of escaping them. Owning your own business has its share of problems and you must love the challenge of doing something for yourself, builidng your own company, to survive. Ask yourself repeatedly why you want to become independent; if it is a temporary or sudden decision, then you may not be prepared to handle all the challenges.
