Networking skills are something that every professional should aspire to obtain.

Business networking can put a lot of pressure on an individual. It can be overwhelming to remember the do’s and don’ts because no one wants to waste their time or make a bad impression. However, by remembering a few basic networking concepts, business owners and professionals can take some of the pressure off of themselves and network with ease.

Use Professional Business Cards

Business cards are a top networking tool. Business owners and professionals are doing themselves a great disservice if they do not ensure that their business cards are professional. It is a bad reflection on the person and the company if the business cards are perforated around the edges, poorly designed, and full of irrelevant information. Instead, one should follow these tips for a professional business card.

Prepare For Networking Questions

Business networkers should prepare to answer questions about themselves and what they do. One should also be informed on current events surrounding their industry. It can be embarrassing and leave a bad impression if one is not well-versed on issues that pertain to their industry. However, this is not the only type of information that should be prepared. Networkers also need to prepare to ask others questions.

Good networking questions are engaging and thought provoking. Sometimes, they may even be entertaining. The point of these questions is to help foster a relationship. By asking good questions one can prove himself or herself to be a caring and engaging individual. People remember when someone makes them feel good, and that will leave more of a positive impression than someone who solely talks about their own endeavors.

Understand the Goal of Networking

It goes against conventional wisdom, but the goal of networking should not be to be a salesperson for yourself or your company.

When attending small business networking events, one might think that they should go around and talk to as many people as time allows. Traditional business advice says that one should get their business information in as many hands as possible. Unfortunately, that advice is misguided, as the goal of networking is to build relationships which lead to trust. One cannot build relationships if their only goal is to talk about themselves and pass out business cards.

People do business with and refer people to those that they trust. People don’t like to be talked at or sold to. While some may be polite and listen to advertising spiels, the likelihood of a follow-up is practically nonexistent.

Networking is about building a strong network; it is not about collecting business cards or making sales presentations. Therefore the best networking tips to remember are to be authentic, be professional, and be selfless.
