It can be a challenge to start a small business. Luckily, there are several free resources available for start ups.
When someone decides to start a small business, there are so many things to think about. Getting through all the regulatory red tape, coming up with a business plan and setting up the actual business can really be overwhelming, especially for someone who is starting a first business without a partner. Luckily, there are places a new home business owner can turn to for help. In most cases, there isn't even a fee involved.
Visit the Library
Almost all library systems have a reference section with small business information, such as state regulations and start up guides for various business ideas. Some libraries go a step further and have a dedicated small business librarian who will consult with people who want to start a business and help them make their way through the red tape jungle.
Services you may find at your library can include:
- Business plan software - This software can really simplify the entire business plan creation process. A wizard, sample plans and help functions guide the new small business owner through the steps of making a good business plan.
- Local business FAQ's - Some librarians take the time to post answers to questions they answer over and over again on the library system's website or will make a brochure that contains the questions and answers as a handy resource for local small business owners.
- Step by step guides to creating a business in the library's county - This is an extremely useful resource for people who aren't sure how to turn the dream of being self employed into a reality. A good guide will take the prospective business owner from the idea brainstorming process to the moment the business opens its doors.
- One on one consultations - A small business librarian will sit down with a prospective or current business owner to brainstorm, make suggestions, or offer referrals to another service, such as the government's Small Business Administration for that area.
- Seminars and programs - Free learning opportunities can range from guidance on creating business websites to help with being a good boss.
S.C.O.R.E. Some Help
The Service Corp of Retired Executives is another resource for new small business owners. One on one consultations and fantastic free programs, such as how to prepare for disasters, are just a few benefits this organization offers businesses that need some help. S.C.O.R.E. has quite a few resources, including classes, available online, which can be a great benefit for busy new business owners.
Talk to the Small Business Administration
One of the best things the government offers for home business owners is free access to the SBA. This organization has some excellent resources, such as the small business planner and information on getting a small business loan.
