A blog is an excellent tool to help you build your business. This article features advice on how to get started and why you should have one.

If you own a home business or a small business, a blog can really help you build your business for several reasons. When you have a small business, it could be a challenge to find low cost ways to market yourself and position yourself as an expert. A blog can help you achieve both of these things.

A blog is also a great way to get more customers and increase the revenue of your business. Here the basics of starting a blog.

You Don’t Need Your Own Domain

If you are just getting started, you may not want to pay the money for the hosting fees. That’s okay because there are plenty of blog networks that will host your blog for free such as blogger.com.

However, keep in mind that if you want to position yourself as an expert and make your business look more credible, your own domain will really help. There are pros and cons to both methods.

Choose a Blog Platform

If you decide to use your own domain to host your blog, you will need to choose a blog platform. There are several out there including Wordpress, Moveable Type, and B2Evolution.

The most popular seems to be Wordpress, but that shouldn’t be the only determining factor. You need to find the platform that makes sense for your needs and goals.

Position Yourself as an Expert

When choosing a niche for your blog, make sure that the niche you choose helps position you as an expert in your field. For example, if you want to start a freelance writing business, you will probably want to start a blog on writing or freelance writing. If you are an interior designer, your blog will have to do with decorating and home improvement.

Provide Helpful Information

When it comes to marketing your business through your blog, you need to attract readers by providing helpful information. If you have a blog about decorating because you are an interior designer, you will provide your readers with tips and information pertaining to decorating. Then, if they like your tips, they’ll think of you when they go to hire a designer.

Start a Newsletter

Starting a newsletter is a great way to keep in touch with your customers and potential customers. You can either use a free service such as Yahoo or a paid service. It will depend on your budget and your needs. Send the newsletter out weekly or monthly. Provide a helpful tip or useful articles with plenty of link to your blog. You can also advertise your business. If you don’t want to write your own content, you can find free articles through sites like ezinearticles.com.

Get Revenue from Your Blog and Newsletter

You can also get some extra revenue from your blog and newsletter. Encourage other businesses to advertise on your site and in your newsletter and you could end up with more cash. There are also blog networks and services that help you focus on finding advertisers.

A blog is an excellent tool to help you build your business. Not only is it a good way to keep in touch with existing customers, but it also will help you find new ones. And, you can also make additional money through advertising.
