Those who think that opening a franchise is an easy way to start a business couldn't be more wrong. Granted, franchises do succeed more often than stand-alone busineses. That's because the franchisor offers a proven plan.
But hard work is still required of the franchisee. There will be sleepless nights and worries. There will be times in which the business isn't functioning as it should. Times when money is tight. Marketing plans that fail. Employees that were mistakes.
But there three critical steps to take to help the business thrive:
To succeed as a franchisee, the first step is in selecting the right franchise opportunity. Make sure that the business lines up with lifestyle and financial goals. Make doubly sure that the franchise offers a strong model, one that can be replicated in a local market and that training ensures employees and managers know what's expected. Don't get caught up in the excitement of owning a business that this step is ignored. Do research to make sure that the franchise selected is the absolute best.
Franchise success comes because the franchisor provides a proven plan. Successful franchisees will know how to follow the plan, how to get the most out of training opportunities. Having business savvy isn't enough. The successful franchisee will know how to combine that business savvy with the right franchise opportunity. While the franchisor provides the plan, the franchisee still has much leeway to make the plan work. Select the wrong location and the business will wither. Hire the wrong employees and watch things fail.
Following a plan doesn't mean blindly copying it of course. The successful franchisee will take the best of what the franchisor offers and tailor it to his local community. That may mean different marketing plans -- or additional marketing support. It may mean an additional product line (though check the terms of the franchise agreement to make sure its allowed.) It may mean a franchise that complements an existing business.
Franchisees should be relying on their franchisors for help along the way. Don't wait for situations to get dire; continue to seek support and advice from the franchisor at every step of the way. Learn from others' mistakes. Network with other franchisees to see how business is working for them and how they've navigated choppy waters. Continue to participate in webinars and continuing education offered by the franchisor. Don't let up on training when the business doors are opened.
Hard work and a franchisor's proven plan combine to offer a greater chance of succeeding.
