When someone starts up a multi-level marketing (MLM) business, he generally goes about it one of two ways:
- He assumes that he's going to get rich quick, so he grabs the MLM opportunity and runs without taking the time to do any research, or
- He realizes that it's a business and he takes his time, focusing on the pros and cons, comes up with a plan, and proceeds if he thinks it's worthwhile.
There is very little room for middle ground, but there are always the people who did some very quick planning and who think they're prepared when they really aren't. They get weeded out and go out of business very quickly, just like the 'get rich quick' people who don't actually want to work and who don't take the MLM business seriously.

Some of them can be very legitimate opportunities, but even the best of them are usually more lucrative if the person who wants to start one up and get involved has a solid business plan.
What Should be in an MLM Business Plan?
No matter what kind of business someone is starting up, whether it's MLM or something else, there are basics. In any MLM business plan, include:
- What kind of time and effort will be devoted to the business.
- The cost of the business (start-up and maintenance).
- The expected (realistic and studied) profit.
- The sales strategy.
- The SEO and marketing strategy.
- Whether the company will be online or offline.
- Who will be 'the boss' and next in the chain.
- Penalties and any other issues involved with liquidating or getting out of the business.
- What kind of help is available, from whom, and at what cost.
The Need for an MLM Business Plan
Whether someone really needs an MLM business plan depends on several factors, but most businesses do have some form of plan. When he looks online for the right MLM business advertisement, the person considering the MLM business will want to find out how large the company is and what he'll be expected to do. There are some companies that are much simpler than others, and the simpler the work and details, the lower the need for a complex (or complete) business plan.
How organized someone is also plays a role. Some people are very good at keeping things together all the time. Others do this poorly and need lists for a lot of different things, especially if they have multiple projects going on. Where the new MLM business owner falls in this spectrum will also have much to do with whether he will be spending some of his time working up a business plan, or whether he can remember all that he needs to focus on daily.
